The U.S. Mint was the one to strike the medal. The President of the United States, George Bush, presented the medal to Dalai Lama in the Capitol Rotunda. Note that the general public may enjoy bronze replicas of the medal, which were also struck by the U.S. Mint.
Thedesign of the medal includes a portrait of Dalai Lama on the front, having Himalayas in the background. The designer of the front was Don Everhart, who works as a sculptor-engraver at the U.S. Mint. Dalai Lama medal also feature an inscription saying: "14th Dalai Lama of Tibet," "Tenzin Gyatso," (the birth name of Dalai Lama), "Act of Congress" and "2006."
The medal's reverse was designed by Joseph Menna, who works as a sculptor of medals at the U.S. Mint. The reverse features a stylized lotus flower, which represents a symbol of purity, and Dalai Lama's quotation, in which he mentioned: "World peace must develop from inner peace. Peace is not the absence of violence. Peace is the manifestation of human compassion."
