News reports from China state that thousands of bank branches have already started exchanging the new banknotes to people willing to obtain them. It's interesting to note that currently there are a huge number of people who are standing in line just to obtain the new bills.
Lots of news stories around the world focused on the fact that the image on the new ten yuan banknote features a design related to Olympic Games and not the portrait of Mao Zedong
It is worth mentioning that since 1999, when China marked 50 years from the time when the communists took over the power in the country, the image of Mao Zedong featured on all Chinese banknotes.
The new banknote includes the image on Beijing's National Museum
That banknote's back illustrates a Greek discus-thrower along with the year 2008 spelled in Arabic script. The two sides of the note have on their background the Temple of Heaven, which is one of the most popular landmarks of People's Republic of China.
The 10 yuan banknote can be exchanged for about $1.46 at today's exchange rate.
