Gigantic Coin To Mark the Introduction of a New Scouts Commemorating Dollar Coin

australian ceremony for scout centenary coinAt the end of February, the Royal Australian Mint presented its new circulating $1 coin along with a series of new collector coins, which featured a gigantic commemorating coin that honors the Centenary of Scouts Australia.

The upper mentioned model coin was the biggest coin ever made by the Australian Mint. The commemorative coin is 400 times the size of a usual $1 circulating coin. The unveiling took place in front of a group of youngsters who represented different scouting groups from Australia.

scout coinsSenator Hon Nick Sherry, who is the Minister for Superannuation and Corporate Law, said a few words during the ceremony.

"Scouts Australia was founded 100 years ago. We all know just how big a part of our culture the Scouts have become since then, with over 60,000 scouts spread across the country. Launching this coin is a perfect way for everyone in Australia to remember the achievements and contributions of the scout movement founded by Lord Baden Powell over the past century. The Government is very happy to recognize this incredible contribution and has declared 2008 the Year of the Scout."

"Today, this giant coin is symbolic of the equally giant contribution that Scouts have made to Australia …"

The official website of the Australian Mint highlights the process of production of the decimal coinage, beginning with 1966. The decimal coinage used standard circulating coin designs such as the echidna, the lyrebird, the platypus, the Coat of Arms, the kangaroo and the Aboriginal elder.
