Silver gold coins depicting pope world youth day

Australian Perth Mint has struck silver and gold commemorative coins to mark the World Youth Day 2008, which represents the biggest youth event in the world. It is worth mentioning that the World Youth Day 2008 is organized by the Catholic Church and it takes place in Sydney during the period between July 15 and 20, 2008.

Several hundreds of thousands of people will commemorate the event together with his Holiness Pope Benedict XVI, who is going to visit Australia for the first time.

To mark the XXIII World Youth Day, the Perth Mint of Australian made a set of limited edition one ounce silver and gold coins that illustrate the portrait of the Pope. The new commemorative coins are already available for sale. It's interesting to note that two coins have already been granted in a ceremony to Cardinal George Pell, Archbishop of Sydney.

According to the Catholic News Agency that gave a report on the ceremony and commemorative Australian numismatic items, quoted the CEO of Perth Mint Ed Harbuz as saying: "The Perth Mint is delighted to present His Eminence with our Vatican-approved 1oz Gold Proof Coin and a 1oz Silver Proof Coin. World Youth Day is a momentous occasion in the history of Australia and the Catholic Church and we hope that our range of commemorative coins will help to keep the memory alive for years to come."
