julius_caesar_statueGaius Julius Caesar was a great personality who rose from lower shadow levels to become the leading figure in the late Roman republic. He was a wise general and a brilliant politician. He was the one to become the dictator of the Roman republic bringing down all his rivals.

Julius Caesar gained his merit later in life. For many years Caesar was the protégé of Crassus, a powerful and wealthy figure of that time. Julius was able to take advantage on the rivalry of Crassus with Pompey, who was as powerful as Crassus. In 60 BC, Julius, Crassus and Pompey, made the first Triumvirate, a pact according to which each of the three men divided effectively the rule.

In 58 BC Julius Caesar went off to control military operations in Gaul, France. His armies were roughly outnumbered and battled in foreign land far behind enemy lines with great courage, using wise tactics. If Caesar felt that his armies are losing ground, he had a habit of hurrying to the front lines, thus putting himself at risk. It is worth noting that Julius Caesar was a very charismatic warrior and leader. He was highly appreciated by his soldiers, who were very loyal to him. All the times the campaign of the emperor in Gaul is compared to Alexander the Great.

At this time Pompey together with the Roman Senate drew worries about the great popularity and military forces of Caesar. This is why they ordered Julius to separate his army and return to Rome. Caesar realized that in case he agreed to return he would fall in great danger. Not obeying the order of the Senate, Caesar marched in 49 BC with his armed forces on Rome. He took Rome with ease, however, Pompey managed to escape to Greece.

This was the time when Cleopatra was at battle for power with her brother Ptolemy XIII. Caesar interfered in the conflict and involved into the Alexandrian War, which took part in 47 BC. The war ended victoriously for Caesar who managed to keep the throne secure for Cleopatra, who later gave birth to his child.

Wishing to follow the steps of his hero, Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar hoped to conquer Asia. But it was predicted that Asia could be conquered only by a king. At that time Julius had the title of a dictator who had the supreme power. He decided to appeal for the title of "King" to the Senate in 44 BC, while outside of Italy Caesar has killed of a big group of senatorial conspirators.

The murder of Julius Caesar has been depicted as a noble act and an effort to fight tyranny, keep away from monarchy as well as re-establish the rule of Senate. Such sentiments played their role in some of Rome's conspirators, especially this concerns Brutus. The emperor was considered to be a menace to the aristocratic elite of Roman Empire. It is interesting to note that Julius Caesar was in the process of significantly expanding the Senatorial membership. He threatened to perturb the social order, which had served the main conspirators.

After the assassination of Caesar, his successors Antony and Octavian would soon defeat the conspirators and secure Rome. Finally the Roman Republic was brought to an end after Octavian became its first Emperor (Augustus).
