The Roman Emperor Vespasian (9 AD to 79 AD)

Roman Emperor VespasianThe full name of the future emperor of Rome Vespasian was Titus Vespasius Flavius. He was born in 9 AD in Falacrina. His parents were T Flavius Sabinus and Vespasia Polla. The father of Vespasian was both a successful tax collector and a banker. There is no detailed information regarding the early years of Vespasian. It is, however, known that until 15 his parents had long business journeys and his grandmother, Tertulla, was the one to take care of him.

In 25 AD the future emperor saw a great increase in his position; he was given the senatorial rank. After his elevation of power, Vespasian passed though several important positions. He held the position of a tribune to Thrace and quastorship in Crete. Vespasian also held the offices of aedile and praetor under Gaius.

Flavia Domitilla became the wife of Vespasian during his early years. She gave birth to three children, one daughter and two future emperors named Titus and Domitian. During the reign of Claudius, Vespasian enjoyed great favor. He was the one lead the legions during the invasion of Roman troops, led by Claudius, in Britain. Vespasian proved to be a good leader; his mission in Britain was successful, his legions were victorious in thirty battles. Vespasian was able to subjugate two local tribes and conquer the island of Wight.

Roman Emperor Nero bustDue to his success in Britain, Emperor Claudius awarded him with a triumph and gave him two priesthoods. In 51 AD, Vespasian was raised to the rank of Consul. When Nero came to rule the empire, Vespasian became proconsul of Africa. When Vespasian returned to Rome from his mission in Africa he was one of the leading persons in the court of Nero. He was so important that accompanied the Roman Emperor on his well-known journey to Greece. During one of the battle in this tour Vespasian fell asleep, thus falling out of favor with Nero. In 67 AD Nero sent Vespasian in Judea to calm his unrest.

Due to a number of revolts that took place in 68 AD, the reign of Roman Emperor Nero was brought to an end. He ended up committing suicide and Galba became the emperor. Thus began the period of the four emperors. At this time Vespasian swore his loyalty to each of the emperors but Vitellius. He started a revolt against Vitellius and after a short struggle, the army of Vespasian entered Rome. The event took place in December 20, 69 AD. During the battle Vitellius was killed and Vespasian became the Emperor of Rome.

Because of huge spending made by Nero and Gaius along with the civil war that took place in the same year the empire was ravaged. Vespasian managed to restore the city that had burned in 69 AD and built a temple dedicated to the deified Claudius. The temple was raised on the Caelian hill.

ColiseumVespasian also supported the rebuilding on empty lots within Rome and constructed a temple of peace to mark the end of the civil war. He also began the construction of the Flavian Amphitheater or Coliseum, which would later be finished by his successor Titus.

The Roman Emperor believed that these construction projects along with some other improvements required for fixing the Roman economy would need a lot of investments. In order to get such big funds, Vespasian ordered a decrease in the production of particular goods, thus making these goods less common, which would lead to the increase in their price. Taxes were increased in provinces; Vespasian even set a fee for the use of public toilets.

It is worth mentioning that Vespasian was the first Roman Emperor to pay teachers who gave lessons of Latin language and Greek Rhetoric. He supported theatrical production and arranged generous state dinner parties in order to help food trade. Vespasian lived a somewhat simple life, without much spending for the rest of the Roman people to follow.

In regard to the imperial nature, Vespasian re-established the senatorial and equestrian orders with people of good qualification from Italy as well as from other provinces. He also restored discipline in the Roman army and punished a lot of people that served Vitellius. Because he was able to increase the number of legions, Vespasian made several successful campaigns meant to expand the boarders of the empire. He continued the invasion of Britain, which began during the reign of Claudius and occupied northern Britain along with pacified Wales.

The rule of Vespasian has also been remembered for the stagnation of the Jewish revolt in Palestine. Before he became the emperor of Rome, Vespasian was on duty in Palestine. More trouble occurred in 70 AD when a huge revolt of the Jewish took place. This is when Vespasian sent his son, Titus, to stop the revolt and after a long-time battle, the Roman army with Titus in charge crushed Jerusalem. When Roman troops entered the city they made it one with the land.

In 79 AD Vespasian died, being the Roman Emperor for ten years. He managed to bring Rome back to normal after the disasters created by Nero. Upon his death, Vespasian was deified by the senate. Titus was his undisputable successor.
