Having the goal of celebrating the UN Year of the Planet Earth , the Swiss Confederation decided to introduce a new gold coin with a face value of 50 Swiss francs. The number of issued commemorative coins is limited to 6,000.
It is worth mentioning that 2008 was proclaimed the "International Year of Planet Earth". All activities linked with earth sciences are going to be managed by a number of UN organizations, including UNESCO and International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS).

The auction entitled 2008 Baltimore ANA Signature Auction, headed by Heritage Auction Galleries looks forward to present a rare Braided Hair large cent that was minted on a half cent planchet. It's interesting to note that the rarity was consigned by a Northwest family, whose members admitted that they were unaware of the coin's uniqueness. The auctioning of the coin will be held in the period between July 30 and August, 2008. During the early July the lot listing is going to be provided online at the official site of Heritage.
